Typhoon Amphan in the Bay of Bengal wreaked havoc in India and Bangladesh, killing 16 people and injuring dozens.
The powerful typhoon Amphan hit the coast of the Indian state of West Bengal yesterday and the storm has caused massive loss of life and property.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has confirmed the death toll of 12 people in the state from the storm and expressed fears of an increase in casualties.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee says thousands of roofs have been blown off and trees uprooted in West Bengal due to the storm.
Water has accumulated in the low-lying areas of West Bengal and rescue operations are underway to drain it.
The storm also severely affected Calcutta Airport, submerging a section of the airport and damaging several aircraft.
Amphan in Bangladesh
Typhoon Amphan also affected three coastal districts of Bangladesh, killing four people and injuring several others.
The storm is causing heavy rains with strong winds in the coastal areas of Bangladesh
The coastal districts of Satkhira, Sundarbans, Korgram and Jamalpur in Bangladesh were affected, two people were killed when a boat sank in Patwa Khali, one person was killed when a wall collapsed in Mathberia area of Perojpur and a tree fell in Kamal Nagar area of Satyara. The woman died.
As many as 135 people have been evacuated from Bangladesh's coastal areas due to Hurricane Amphan.
