Afghanistan: Suicide bomber kills 15 at funeral
A suicide bomber blew himself up at a funeral in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar, killing at least 15 people, including a member of the provincial council and a member of parliament, and wounding 56, while an airstrike in the northern province of Balkh killed 11 Taliban militants. The militants were killed.
Local officials have confirmed the incident. Unidentified security sources told Xinhua that a suicide bomber blew himself up at 11 a.m. local time during the last rites of burial of a former local police officer in Kozkunar district. Eleven Taliban insurgents were killed in an overnight airstrike in Afghanistan's northern province of Balkh, the Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement. Attempts were made to destroy a highway with heavy machinery in the Palash Posh area of Balkh District of the province. According to the statement, the Afghan Air Force received an intelligence report and launched an air strike in which 11 militants were killed and 10 others were injured. The Taliban militant group has not yet commented.
