Forty people, including women and children, were killed in a horrific attack in war-torn Syria. The attack took place in the Afrin region of Syria, where the majority of Turkish-backed fighters live. Turkish officials believe the operation may have been carried out by Kurds fighting against Turkey.

According to foreign media, the attack took place in a market where a standing oil tanker exploded and a fire spread far and wide. Eleven children were also killed and 47 others were injured in the incident, most of them in critical condition, leading to fears of an increase in casualties.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a crowded market, killing at least 36 people, including women and children, and wounding more than 40 others, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

According to the Associated Press, the hospital had 10 completely mutilated bodies covered in blankets, while another nearby ambulance had two mutilated bodies.

The blast burned dozens of nearby vehicles and shops to ashes, and nearby water tankers were used to extinguish the blaze.

Hundreds of people have been killed in similar attacks in Turkish-backed fighter jets in recent weeks, and Turkey blames Kurdish fighters for the attacks.

Turkey and its allied Syrian fighters captured Afrin in a military operation in 2018 and evicted local Kurdish fighters, displacing thousands of Kurdish civilians.

Turkey considers Kurdish fighters terrorists and has carried out a series of attacks on Turkish forces and allied bases in Syria since the capture of Afrin.
